Septic Tank Risers and Lids: Why Every Homeowner Should Install Them

Septic MaintenanceUpdated: June 2026SepticHomefix.com

If your septic tank lid is buried more than 6 inches underground, you're paying extra every time your tank is pumped — and adding risk of damage. Risers solve this.

What Are Septic Tank Risers?

Septic tank risers are cylindrical extensions (made of polyethylene, PVC, or concrete) that connect to the access openings on top of a buried septic tank and extend upward to ground level, bringing the access lid from wherever the tank is buried to within a few inches of the surface.

Why Install Risers?

Riser Materials

Installation

Risers are typically installed during a pump-out visit. The technician pumps the tank, cuts the tank lid to accept the riser extension, and seals it to prevent groundwater infiltration. The access lid is placed on top of the riser at or slightly above grade. Total cost is typically $200–$600 per riser opening.

Lid Security

Riser lids should be secured against accidental opening — children can fall into open septic tanks, which is a serious hazard. Modern riser lids typically have locking mechanisms or require tools to remove.

Most contractors charge $200–$400 per riser opening installed during a pump-out, including materials. A standard system has 2 openings; expect $400–$800 total. This pays for itself in 3–5 service calls.

Technically yes, but it's typically done during a pump-out when the tank is already open and accessible. Having your pump-out company do it at the same time is the practical approach.

Minimal. Inspect lids annually for cracks or damage. Make sure lids are secured properly. After heavy freeze-thaw cycles, check that seals haven't been damaged.

Not universally, but many newer jurisdictions require them. Even where not required, they're strongly recommended by septic professionals for the savings and access benefits.
